It was very refreshing to hear the Sci-Arc presenters showcasing conceptual architectural works. In Japan, conceptual story-telling is hard to come by. Conceptual work intends to leave loose ends, prompts more questions and further investigations. Innovation thrives in this nature. It's about tapping into unknown territories, asking "what-if"s and be ok to be uncomfortable.
Japan architect panelists showcased many world-class projects and focused more on site conditions, material and methods and innovative solutions to engineering challenges.
Unfortunately there is no time for panel discussion this year. It would be interesting to see how the difference in practice from two countries interprets the symposium topic of discussion.
And who doesn't have projects in China these days! :-) That says a lot about where the innovation brewing ground is.
